Annual Outing - August 9, 2008

IBEW Local Union 488 will hold it's annual outing on Saturday, August 9, 2008.

WHERE: Dickinson Town Park Pavilion, Elm Drive in Newtown, Connecticut

WHEN: 8/9/2008 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

The outing is always a great time. Come and catch up with old friends or take the time to make a few new ones. As always, there will be plenty to eat and drink along with door prizes, raffles, tools and games. Support your Local Union by purchasing your ticket today! We will also have new 488 shirts on sale.

Tickets are $30.00 in advance or $35.00 at the door. 488 retirees come for free!

Tickets are available at the hall from 7:30 - 4:00 each day. They will also be available at the July 21st Union Meeting.

Continuing Education Classes Wrap Up for Summer

The 2008 Continuing Education Courses have finished up for the summer break. Our last class was held on June 14, 2008 with 50 people in attendance. We intend to have at least one or possibly two courses available in September to accomodate everyone who is waiting until the last minute to complete the class. Check back here in early August for more details.

Schmidheini Family Benefit Dinner

Local 488 Brother Jeff Schmidheini was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma two years ago at the age of 30. Currently there is no cure for this disease and Jeff is unable to work due to his illness. Jeff has recently been through his third stem cell transplant and the cancer only stayed in remission for three short weeks. He is now undergoing chemotherapy treatments and continues to be in and out of Yale New Haven Hospital.

Jeff and his wife Amy have two sons, Allen and Patrick ages 2 and 5 years old. This young family needs a helping hand to make ends meet. Medical expenses, travel costs including gas to go back and forth to treatments and hospitals, family expenses, car payments, regular household expenses and other bills have exhausted their bank account.

A new website has been developed by the IBEW Second District Office to help in the fight against the increasing number of anti-union legislative proposals submitted each year. Some examples of items that are constantly under attack are prevailing wage laws, licensing laws, and regulations pertaining to apprenticeship ratios. These laws if changed (for the worse), will have a negative impact on all working families, whether they are union members or not.

IBEW Local 326 Survivors Fund

The following information regarding the tragedy in IBEW Local 326 is posted here at the request of IBEW Local 488 members who were present at our December union meeting. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our brothers and sisters in Local 326 and especially to the families of these three brothers. Please do whatever you can to help make things a little easier for these families during thier time of need.

On November 6^th IBEW Local 326 suffered a terrible tragedy. At approximately 9:30 am, there was a catastrophic boiler tube failure on Unit 3 at Salem Harbor Station. Brothers Mark Mansfield, Phil Robinson, and Mathew Indigelia sustained severe steam burns over 90% of their bodies. All three brothers were transported by Med- Flight to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston where they passed away in the early morning hours of November 7^th.

A Wonderful Evening

The return of IBEW Local 488 Pin Night at Roberto's Restaurant was a great success. The spirit of brotherhood was certainly in the air and everyone present seemed to be having a wonderful time. This has been confirmed many times over as we continue to receive positive comments about the evening from our brothers and sisters that were in attendance.

Business Manager Peter Carroll opened the remarks portion of the evening talking about many things including the strong outlook of the work picture in our area, healthcare issues, and also announced an increase to our local pension benefit. Peter also introduced the special guests that were in attendance which included IBEW Second District Vice President and 488 member Frank Carroll and International Representative Richard Panagrossi. Also in attendance was the management team from Insurance Prgrammers. During his remarks, company CEO Larry Bourland talked about the excellent relationship that IPI has built over the years with Local 488 and also the pleasure of serving our members. He introduced his senior staff President Diane Klobukowski and Executive Vice President Richard Poulaino who were available all evening for our members to speak with directly. We thank them all for taking time out of their busy schedules and spending some time with us.
